"I create sculptures in an exacting personal fashion revealing the power of durable materials."
Shapes and forms are an expression of everyday life.
I stretch preconceived ideas of how geometric concepts fit together to spark an alternative perspective.
As a metal sculptor, I analyze and then simplify shapes, proving how intricate objects translate into fundamental elements.
Utilizing aluminum, steel, and found objects, I create sculptures in an exacting personal fashion revealing the power of durable materials.
Connecting with the observer is a combination of inspiration and intuition. I invite the audience to walk around my sculpture and view everyday shapes and forms with a fresh point of view.
BIOGRAPHY
James Rosburg was born in Sioux City, Iowa in 1957. He received both a BFA and an Art Education degree in 1980 from the University of Iowa.
One of Rosburg’s many influences was his grandfather who was a civil engineer. He encouraged his grandson to follow his path of designing bridges and building roads. Rosburg said, “Although I did not pursue a civil engineering degree, it’s interesting that the tools I use for my art are some of the same ones he used.” Many of Rosburg’s abstract metal sculptures incorporate similar angles and arches visible in bridges and architecture.
James Rosburg has always enjoyed creating and combining shapes and forms into unconventional configurations. Knowing early in life he would pursue an art career, Rosburg studied ceramics and drawing along with metal fabrication and foundry at the University of Iowa. During his studio studies Rosburg received two art scholarships and an invitation into the prestigious graduate level sculpture foundry class, taught by internationally known Professor of Sculpture, Julius Schmidt.
After completing his BFA, he worked with Chicago-based ConStruct Gallery. There he learned the sculpture world nuances from notable contemporary American sculptors including John Henry, Charles Ginnever, and Lyman Kipp. After three years of welding, operating cranes, delivering and installing large-scale contemporary sculptures, Rosburg opened an independent studio in North Miami, Florida. This is where he began creating, fabricating and exhibiting his own work.
As a contemporary abstract metal sculptor, Rosburg expresses complex ideas in the simplest forms possible. With three-dimensional shapes being the most difficult to render in metal fabrication, he utilizes aluminum, steel, and found objects combining them into edgy and whimsical forms. The surfaces on his works range from monochromatic high-finish colors to rusty-brown weathered steel. Most of his sculptures are freestanding ranging in size from two to seventeen feet. Of prominent interest is his sculpture “Harlan” located in Jacksonville, Florida in front of the Museum of Contemporary Art Jacksonville. Rosburg also creates smaller works grouping them into series that produce larger statements.
James Rosburg’s sculptures are in many private and university collections including Cornell University, Ithaca, NY; University of Georgia, Athens, GA; Rollins College, Winter Park, FL; Boca Raton Museum of Art, Boca Raton, FL; Museum of Contemporary Art Jacksonville, Jacksonville, FL. He has completed commissions for Foram Group, Inc., Miami, FL; Sherlon Investments Corp., N.V., Jacksonville, FL; and Carolynn Korn Interiors, Miami, FL. Rosburg’s one-person shows include Commune Di Bagno a Ripoli, Florence, Italy; Ken Elias Gallery, West Palm Beach, FL; Ann Norton Sculpture Gardens, West Palm Beach, FL; and Esperante Sculpture Center, Palm Beach County Cultural Council, West Palm Beach, FL. Rosburg has participated in group exhibitions at galleries, museums and sculpture gardens including: Armory Art Center, West Palm Beach, FL; Downtown Development Authority, Fort Lauderdale, FL; Schmidt Center Gallery, Florida Atlantic University, Boca Raton, FL; Springfield Art Association, Springfield, IL; Galleria Vialarga Provincea Di Firenze, Florence, Italy; Millelegni, Forme Del Legno, Pratovecchio, Italy; Dietrich Contemporary Arts, New York, NY; Appalachian State University, Boone, NC; Museum of Art, Fort Lauderdale, FL; and The New Gallery, University of Miami, Coral Gables, FL.
James Rosburg currently lives and works in the Tampa Bay Area, Florida.
